  It seems that your biggest obstacle would be to get publishers to agree to participate in this service. Copyright issues get really tight even when you are dealing with journal articles and search engines such as Psyc Info on college campuses.
  
  Another obstacle is whether or not people want to read all their textbooks online. It would have to be a large discount, I think. Check out the popularity of Amazon's Kindles. Are they taking off? Or are people preferring the physical copies? Unless you have Adobe Acrobat Professional, you can't highlight on pdf's either.
