The Kovacs Hammer: A silent claw hammer utilizing noise-cancelling headphone technology.
Idea Description
The sound produced by a hammer striking a nail (120 db) will damage the hearing of contractors and other laborers over time, while disturbing local residents. By producing an opposing, predictable sound upon the hammer strike, you could eliminate sound much as noise-cancelling headphones do. Because sound travels faster through metal than open air, you could project an opposing sound centimeters from the strike surface instead of millimeters. All you need is a high-impact sound chip, an amplifier, and a power source capable of generating the 120 db.

Q1: Would 10k be enough to build a working prototype?
Would the device be cost-effective?
It's called a Kovacs Hammer in honor of Ernie Kovacs, a brilliant comedian who pioneered many surreal television tricks including having objects give off a completely unexpected sound effect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernie_Kovacs
