Timed Release Irrigation
Timed Release Irrigation
Idea Description
A portable device to water plants over extended time periods without the presence of frequent human interaction or formal plumbing. Keep window boxes and other potted plants watered when an owner is away from home for more than a few days. Insert the product a few inches into the soil, or place it on top of the soil, and it will release water at an even rate over a 3, 5, or 7-day period.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
To investigate the science behind the properties of barometric-based release and semi-permeable membrane properties. Or, to find additional financial backing.
Vote for it now.

Q1: Can water be stored and automatically released in large enough quantities to maintain the life of plants in a 36-inch long window box, or 12-inch diameter pot?
A simple IV bag and drip-line from the hospital works good for this kind of thing. It was one of the manual ones that crimp the tube if you push the clamp forward. This is what I did many years ago to keep a terrarium full of reptiles and plants alive while I was out of town for over a week. I imagine a larger scale and more precise version would do well. It could be as simple as that if you can come up with an interesting design solution for how to contain the water. The problem with the IV bags is you had to hang them off of something. Contact me if you need any help coming up with a product design.
