Idea Description

Located in Brooklyn, New York the idea is to have a coffee shop that would serve as a primary job training site for developmentally delayed youth. In the shop, the youth would serve in all aspects of the operation from stocking, filling orders, cleaning up/bussing and preparing the pastries.

We currently have a job site where students learn customer service skills in a food pantry environment. This would be a next step program to provide real world job experience.

The benefits of the program would be:
-Students would have viable real world job skills that could transfer to outside employment
-The program after initial cost would be self-funded
-Any profits would help food pantry.

What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?

I have a a location that could be adapted for use. Since I am in NYC, the next steps would to be to secure business permits and purchase supplies. Since I already have students willing and able to learn in the program, the main obstacle is finding the start-up costs. The $10,000 would make it a reality.
Step 1. Secure business permits to operate coffee shop
Step 2. Settle any issues of incorporation/etc
Step 3. Purchase supplies needed to start business
Step 4. Set up shop, find volunteer to help with marketing
Step 5. Train student workers
Step 6. Open up shop with student workers.
