Q1: Do you feel this idea is marketable? If so, why? If not, why not? Thank you for your input and for your vote. (1 pieces of advice)
by br116805.12.08 | 04:49 PMPersonally I think using the hair and fur from animals in shelters is an excellent idea. It really does legitimize their existence and could go a long way to helping out struggling shelters. Perhaps you could pay shelters by the bag or what have you for animal fur and you could pay them by quality and assemble the materials into marketable products. Sounds like a great cause to me!

What advice do you have to help me grow my idea?
(14 pieces of advice)05.23.08 | 12:16 PMThank you for the great help Natalie! And congrats! You're doing awesome!!! Keep up the great work and let me know if there is anything that I can do to help. You totally have my support!

by recygirl05.22.08 | 03:06 PMHi Wendy! Thanks for your support. You are allowed to resubmit your idea to stand the chance of being in the final sprint. I sent out an email to all the people in my contact list and hoped that they would send it out to their friends/family. You could also try to get your idea some exposure on pet adoption sites etc. Perhaps you could write to them (if they have a weekly blob or what not) and ask if they could give your cause a mention. It really is a tough run; there are so many good ideas... so many legitimate winners. Personally, I am all for human/animal rights... and environmental protection. That's where my votes will go. Warm wishes. natalie - the earth garden project

by calmguy305.21.08 | 04:14 PMGreat ideas Wendy. A point about the allergies when making your blankets or other items incorporate a stitch logo of a dog or cat into the fabric maybe with the words Cat fur or Dog fur around the logo. this way if the tag ever gets pulled off of the item the logo will still be on the item, telling people what its made from/of

05.19.08 | 11:17 AMCan someone give me advice on how to get back in the sprints?
Do I have to re-enter?
Can I?
I know I'm in the overall, but I want to be in the weekly sprints as I haven't won anything yet.
Thanks! Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
05.13.08 | 11:10 AMHi Natalie! Thanks for stopping by! Great points. I think that the next advice combined with yours would serve to answer the issue nicely. I still have to work with it a little more, but perhaps having two different lines of yarn. Rescue Yarn, and Rescued Pets? Or something along those lines? I really appreciate both of your comments and advice, and it goes along ways towards helping this be a success.
Oh, and yes, this is intended to be a non-profit, and that is the category I originally had it in. I am trying to get this as much exposure as possible and thought this category might get more views.
Thanks again to both of you!Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
05.13.08 | 10:50 AMI understand Natalie's point, but I would support a business/non-profit that posted rescue animals on their yarn. Here's an idea - put pictures on of rescued animals with their happy owners. Money is still given to shelters, but the message turns from look at this poor animal that needs your help to look how happy this animal is now that they are adopted and loved. I like your idea.

by recygirl05.13.08 | 10:40 AMI love your idea, Wendy. The first thing that comes to mind, however, is this: How does one keep tabs of the animals that have already been adopted? i.e. Someone purchases a skein with a picture of an animal on it, but when they go to adopt the pet... it's already taken. Also, it assumes that the yarn will be sold like hot potatoes and that all adoption pictures/info will be current. I hope this helps. I really do wish you all the best. natalie - earth garden project.

05.12.08 | 07:02 PMThank you! Yes, that was part of my original idea. To use the product to weave fabric and produce items such as shawls, jackets, blankets, rugs, etc. and that would be another source of profit to give back to the shelters.
I think buying the fur would make start up more difficult which is why I came up with the idea of donating a portion of the profits to the shelters that participate. That way they are receiving compensation for their product, and it really does give the animals a legitimate reason to be kept alive.
Some people may balk at the idea of the animals essentially "working for their living", however, if it creates a method for them to support themselves, then I personally feel it is the answer to the most basic problems facing shelters today.
Thanks for ALL of the helpful advice! It is greatly appreciated! Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
04.20.08 | 04:54 PMNo, if you think about the dog fur such as Samoyed, Alaskan Eskimo, etc. and how soft they are, it's extremely soft and downy. Cat fur isn't the best for this idea, but you don't have to use every animal for the process, just put the pictures of the animals on the labels and you can use dog, Alpaca, rabbit, etc. because all of these animals are in rescues around the country and they are extremely popular AND expensive to obtain otherwise.

04.18.08 | 02:36 PMThank you very much! It's a good point about the allergies. It's something that would have to be on the labels to warn people. Very good point!
I'm off to read your idea right now and thanks for the vote! Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by sharpf04.18.08 | 02:28 PMSounds cool. You will have to make sure you keep the dog fur apart from the cat fur, because some people are allergic to one or the other, then some are allergic to both! I give you my vote! If you would like to, please return the favor!

04.11.08 | 08:02 PMThat's excellent advice. Very often my ideas are too big and too many and I have to be pulled back and reined in. Thank you very much for your advice. It is greatly appreciated.

Idea Description
Rescue Yarn is like Milk Carton Kids for animals in shelters. It involves using regular high-quality yarn such as wool, alpaca, bamboo, silk, etc. and branding it "Rescue Yarn".
Each skein would have a picture of an animal that is in a shelter in their local area, it's name, breed, age, it's story and background, and where it can be adopted.
As a part of my business model, a portion of the proceeds from each sale will go towards the participating shelters each month to help support the animals in the shelter.
Not only will the animals receive widespread publicity, but the shelters will receive money to offset food, vet bills, shelter costs, etc. Making it unnecessary to euthanise them.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
My first steps, would be to hire a website developer and develop a multilevel website. It will be geared to the shelters, consumers, and vendors.
I'm donating to http://www.the1secondfilm.com/ and http://www.globalfundforwomen.org/ as a part of my business model. They inspire me with their vision and scope. Thank you.

Vote for it now.

Another idea I had to ad to this today was that this would help make animals in shelters self supporting. Dog hair actually has fairly unknown medicinal properties. This is more well known in Russia and other countries. Dog hair produces heat, so it is used in socks and other knitting and weaving to help with arthritis and gout. So the Rescue Yarn could be used to produce items that could be sold for their helpful properties. Another idea to help the animals become self supporting is to cycle some of the money from yarn made into clothing and blankets for the homeless so that the animals have a purpose, and then there wouldn't be a reason to euthanize them.
I also have found who I want to use for the labels and other things people may not think of such as pens. http://www.livingtreepaper.com/ and http://www.goodkindpen.com/goodkindpen/index.htm They embody the spirit of what I want to give back to this world through my business. If I can't leave this world a better place, then I don't have any business receiving this money.
