  I like the general idea, but I don't think a straw is the way to go cause if you use it's it's too late, the beverage is already up to your mouth, plus you'll need all restaurants to use a new kind of straws, don't think it's that easy. On the other hand how about something that you carry around like attached to a key chain or a kid can wear around his/her neck.

  This is great! It should work as simply as embedding the material, in the strips for diabetes blood tests, into the straw. Instead of plastics, perhaps a papery material that is also safe for disposal.

  I'm unclear as to why it needs to be a straw. You could more easily create some a napkin or some paper based product on which you can pour the contents. Similar products exist for people in bars who try to avoid having illicit substances placed in their drinks.

  Sounds like a feasible idea to me. As an adult with diabetes I am often served regular soft drinks instead of diet at restaurants. I, however, am very aware of the taste difference and will notify the restaurant immediately of the error. I could see how a child might not notice the difference in taste and believe the visual clue of a changing color straw could signal the error. The problem I see is that not all children/consumers use a straw, especially in a sit-down restaurant Now at a fast-food restaurant drinks usually come with a lid that will have the diet "button" pressed in to alert the consumer which drink is diet. But even this method is not completely foolproof. Here's an idea, instead of a straw how about a cup made from something that would change color in the presence of sugar. That way the responsibility of the drink choice would be not only the child's/consumer's, but the parent's, the server's, the person that connects the drink mix to the fountain (I've been told before this was the reason my drink was non-diet), as well as the company doing business in thi…mores manner.
