  I believe consumers not only tolerate, but expect advertising on content sites these days. Look at YouTube, MetaCafe, MySpace, etc. - all ad supported. I believe you'd have more success being free and ad-supported, than having a paid membership.

  I think these guys are ad supported....www.livemocha.com. They have a social networking aspect built in.
