LinkEducation: Bringing the Education Movement Together
and May 2008 Finalist.
Come back and vote again during
May 22 -- May 31
to make it the $10,000 winning idea.
Idea Description
Did you know that there are over 1,400 public schools and 5,000 education-focused organizations in New York City alone? Did you know that most people don't even know what programs operate in their community or even their own school? How can our city's children, teachers, or parents take advantage of the many FREE resources if they don't know they exist? LinkEducation (www.linkeducation.org) makes it possible for anyone and everyone (parents, students, teachers, nonprofit leaders, etc) to find education-related resources in their communities. We believe that by working together and empowering people, we can make it possible for all children to have access to excellent education opportunities.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
If we win $10k, we will be able continue maintaining this website and bring people together in person. So far we've been able to build the first version of the website, but we need additional funds to ensure it can continue to grow and develop as the word spreads. $10k allows us to enhance search features, conduct more outreach to low-income communities, and hold a "resource expo" to showcase in person the many programs and resources on our site. In a few years we hope to expand to other cities and make it possible for communities across the country to access education opportunities. $10k will definitely help us get one step closer to that goal.

Thanks Rosanna - the conference sounds fascinating! We'll definitely be in touch.
Here's hoping you achieve the prize and continue with this outstanding venture! Veree
This will be a very interesting and useful website. I hope it will become a website that can serve all the country, not only NYC. I am interested in taking part in your team and helping build a Boston version of linkEd.
Questions I need advice on
- Q1.
- We need to reach even more education organizations, parents, schools, and teachers to make LinkEducation a fully comprehensive directory of education opportunities and a real community for everyone interested in education. We need an efficient way of reaching out to the 5000+ ed. nonprofits in NYC. Respond

Advice
Your website design is very warm and inviting, with a great logo as well, so nice work there.
The front page is a little bit full with too much text, you might want to think about moving the announcements section to another area of the site to keep that homepage as clean and quick to get.
I really like this idea and am excited to see it grow past NYC. What is stopping you now from opening up to the rest of the US. Is there harm in adding other cities and if you are not actively looking for new orgs, at least maybe they can find you.
Thanks Tom - that is great advice. We are actually reworking the home page design as we speak and hopefully will make it a little less text heavy and more even more inviting!
We think we can start adding other cities soon, but we don't want to overextend ourselves. In order to really build a community that goes beyond the internet, it definitely takes ground work and we're not sure we have the capacity to hoof it in other cities just yet! However, I see your point...there isn't necessarily in harm in letting them find us...
Thanks!
