Imagine:
Outlets programmed to stay on all the time as default for the smoke sensor
Outlets programmed to shut power packs after 8 hours to allow a cellphone to charge, then coast.
Light Switch programmed to run the fan for 15 minutes after the light is off to vent the room , but not vent the warm air all day
Lights switches programmed to go on from Dusk to 1AM with randomness to fool intruders
Motion sensor switching all lights on for a man, but not for a kitty-kat :)
Many Outlets programmed to shut off when the front light is off, signaling full power down for all electronics
all the items switched off will use less power then the system controlling them saving you $$$$$$$$
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Today. several systems do this but you need multiple systems and they don't talk together. I want to find several off the shelf items that do some of these functions, redesign them for energy star usage, and find the controller that will allow a SINGLE METHOD OF CONTROL for the diverse technologies. Consider wifi for devices to communicate as opposed to traditional wireline signals. The pricing needs to be about 1/4 of existing "home control" stuff, as they are more into the flash and not the savings. Distribute the comm standards with a very tiny licensing fee for broad distribution with a modest fee income. Future devices all talk the same standard and we are the standard bearers

X-10 is a company that used to make a lot of systems that did similar things, you could program the system through a computer interface. Home automation will be a great market in the coming years. You have to keep in mind that people want things to be cheap and simple. Consider putting the controls directly on the outlet, or integrating 802.11 wifi network access right on the outlet. Getting a little ahead of myself here ... but the invent of IPV6 will allow pretty much every device in the home (refrigerator, garage door, etc) to have an IP address, which you could then control over the net. What about inventing an outlet that simply communicates with the device plugged into it? Or creating an electric panel that switches off circuits when your out of the home?
