Kids in the Canyon: An Outdoor Classroom Experience for Inner City Middle School Students
Idea Description
This program is designed for inner city youth in San Antonio, Texas whose only contact with the outdoors and wildlife has been their trip to the city zoo. They will go to Government Canyon State Natural Area which is only about 20 miles from our campus. They will use binoculars, field guides, GPS units, water and soil test kits, weather instruments, and many other tools to perform scientific observations. We will satisfy almost all of our science standards in geology, weather, habitats and ecosystems on this trip. This area is known for several endangered species of birds and plants. Students will gain an understanding of wildlife conservation opportunities in their own community.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
If I win the funding, I will purchase all of the science tools necessary for the outdoor learning experience. Once these supplies are in place, they will be used by hundreds of students for years and years to come. I will also use the funding for bus transportation to and from the natural area.
Vote for it now.

Sounds like a good idea. How often would you take a group of kids? This looks like something you can build up to in your lessons plans as an end of the year trip.
We would take out groups of about 28 students at a time. Each student would make two trips out to the natural area during the school year. Thanks.
This is a great idea! I believe that inner city school children are the most underprivileged and in need of programs like yours. I am voting for you...Check my idea out and feel free to comment. Thanks.
This idea is great San Antonio is my home I am definitely going to vote for you. Please take a look at my idea doing work with young women on the east coast!
This is a phenomenal idea. Experiences like these can really change students' lives. We are in the process of starting a non-profit that would facilitate these types of experiences. As we get off the ground, we should stay in touch. (Email either jessica.rauch@thegenerationproject.org or eli.savit@thegenerationproject.org if you'd want to combine efforts). Best of luck! Gave you my vote.
