Start a non-profit organization that teaches media production to inner-city youth
Idea Description
Media has a huge impact on our every-day lives. In its many forms, it educates, entertains, and inspires us. It shapes our ideas of the world around us and helps define our interests. But media also manipulates. When backed by interests concerned only with the reaping-in of profits, media is capable of becoming an advocate of excessive consumption, negativity and aggression. As youth are the most sensitive to presentations of the media, they should also be the ones best armed with the tools to create a positive and productive form of media that speaks truth to their reality and worldview.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
I would start a non-profit organization that would offer after-school and weekend workshops in video productions, web-site design, photography, journalism, radio, advertising, media history, and media criticism, among many others, free of charge to inner-city youth. The organization would also operate a paid internship program that would offer youth the ability to work in the field with seasoned media professionals. Furthermore, the organization would also provide general services such as after-school tutoring and counseling to any interested youth.

Media literacy is a huge issue with the continued consolidation of radio, television, and print news. Having worked with inner-city populations in the past, I know that there is a lot of power here. Best of luck!
Sould alot like spyhop productions here in SLC which is a very good company.
I find that media workshops work best with Jr. High and High Schoolers. You might want to think about limiting your programs to those grades. Also, you might want to think about having the schools kick in money as well as getting state and federal support for this potentially valuable program.
I work with an organization in NYC that does this very thing. http://www.vemny.org. In addition to grants, they also get support from local schools and community organizations that they teach in. These programs are very effective and rewarding. Good luck!
excellent... give another opportunity for youth to reach out and communicate with community. we're working with similar concepts through the SE Florida Circle of Change and challengeday.org.
