Ditto Premal Shah. Takes more than $$. Provide an integrated, comprehensive platform using free and easily accessible web tools. YouTube channel, FaceBook group, podcasts on iTunes, all the bits-and-pieces that new artists need to stoke the buzz-making machinery behind the popular song. Really great ideal from really great folks at Calabash Music.

I like this idea. It addresses a real need for struggling musicians in the digital age -- seed funding for recording.

The biggest challenge is going to be getting the musicians to repay their micro-investors. One of the things that makes the micro finance program Kiva.org so compelling is the high rate of repayment of the micro loans -- I believe it is about 97%. If you cannot achieve that kind of repayment, you are not likely to have repeat "investors." Without people coming back time and time again to reinvest in artists your Tune Your World will not be as likely to become a sustainable program. You need to help the musicians develop business models that will enable them to repay their micro investments.

Hey there...just want to echo the comments that have already been made in support of this great idea! Though "micro-finance" is traditionally associated with the fight against global poverty -- something that my organization, Kiva.org, is playing a part in -- there is no reason why the concept can't be applied to other areas such as music. Musicians usually have at least a couple fans :) that want to support what they're listening too above and beyond downloading a track or showing up at a show. To truly realize the potential of this idea, I suggest focusing on building relationships between Musicians and their fans. At Kiva, we have Journal updates to allow lenders to follow the progress of the entrepreneurs they support; something similar would go a long way here. Also, to help raise awareness around your idea, empower Musicians and their fans to spread the word. At Kiva.org, we give our supporters banners for their blogs and footers for their emails; when you have a $0 marketing budget, this can go a long way. Best of luck!

This is great idea and I know the founder of Kiva, who will be next week's guest advisor will have some great insights on how you should move forward! We have a number of student bands on campus who would love to hear about your site as a potential solution to their funding issues. You have done a fantastic job to get the number of registered users you have!! I think the best possible way to get your name out there is to get one or two real 'winners' and publicizes the c#$p out of them. If you can get some major PR in terms of an article in a major music publication this will go a long way to making the process understood and your site known to potential micro-financiers.

A band called Meet Me In St Louis (previously signed to Big Scary Monsters Records) actually did this to record their debut.
They merely asked fans to donate as little or as much as they were willing to, and with the money funded the record.
The band have since split up but the vocalist is now in another band called Shield Your Eyes, who are doing well.
Maybe worth getting in touch with him and finding out how MMISL fans reacted to the idea?

Shield Your Eyes can be found on myspace here:

I think this is a really great idea. I know many struggling musicians who would love an opportunity like this. It could be set up very similarly to Kiva.org (a site I assume you have heard of).

I imagine that the record industry would despise this sort of operation (which is a sure sign that you have something going). I also strongly encourage you to check out community based websites that strive to bring notoriety to struggling musicians. There are a few out there already. Check out http://garageband.com/ for one... there are a few others if you do some google searches.
