Open Source Education - Teach the World for Free

Enhance the open source education movement by MIT (http://ocw.mit.edu) and other universities. Currently those programs are very much text and reference based. I would like to create a quasi social network for each class and allow members to upload tutoring videos and simple explanations for concepts within each chapter of the book, each sub topic, etc.

By allowing the crowd to source the material, viewers will get a wide range of topical explanations and will hopefully learn. I would allow members from all countries, speaking all languages to create study groups, upload explanation videos, links, etc. so that viewers from any walk of life will have the chance to learn the topic.

Additional ways to improve the site:

1) There are some great articles and pieces on how to motivate athletes that are available online. How about creating a feed that automatically streams in all these resources available online such as:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FIH/is_10_69/ai_n18609958
http://www.humankinetics.com/SuccessfulCoaching/IG/chp_07.htm
http://ezinearticles.com/?How-To-Motivate-Athletes-Using-Sports-Psychology-Principles&id=1132217

2) I know you eventually intend to create a forum but for starters how about partnering with coaches from different arenas (basketball, ice hockey, etc). Coaches could give their tips or advices from their own personal experience as to where exactly athletes tend to falter and this way athletes would learn to avoid these potential pitfalls in their life. The coaches need not be popular as it may be difficult to get them on board. This could be like a different section itself such as mentoring/coaching/tips/advices.

3) It will be great if you can have a separate section showcasing the videos. I had a tough time looking for them and I think some of them were not working.

Good luck!

I like your idea, but It will be VERY difficult to get large universities and colleges to adopt this sort of thing without providing them an incentive to do so.

I checked out the MIT link, and I have to say I found it interesting but I think they could have done better. Granted I did not investigate in too much detail, but why could they not have given this a global perspective that other colleges etc could interact with this. Did I miss that somewhere?

What if you provide a software system that simply automates certain functions of the course management/ degree management / accreditation. This way you have somewhat of a hook, with colleges and higherED.

In turn, the one caveat, is that you have full license to re-distribute their content.
How exactly you will get them to agree to that I don't know, maybe have legal agreements that you will omit the university name etc from the course or materials.

Using the videos, and pursuing other web 2.0 features will definitely set you apart from the rest. Also consider linking in with One-Laptop-One-Child types of concepts. How cool would it be if you provided a service that the entire world uses to become educated? I think this idea definitely has the ability to revolutionize education.

Also, consider re-thinking your revenue model. Go after this with more of a Software as a Service approach, rather than ad driven.

I love the idea and would be interested in connecting to others with similar goals as motivation. Having the online training log is a huge plus. I would think about featuring your brother on the site and maybe allow people to post pictures of themselves meeting their goals (finish line shots, etc.). Why not even try to link up with race organizers to cross market. They might also be a source of revenue down the line. Good luck.

grogan31 challenges Open Source Education - Teach the World for Free

I would need to have topic or class moderators so that content is verified for accuracy.

I would need to sign sponsors or ad networks for support revenue (Google Adsense, etc).

I would need to include a system of voting so that top content within each class or topic would rise to the surface.
