When starting a new business, we can't emphasize enough the importance of defining your market and focusing your efforts.

Category: Newsroom | Posted: 12/30/2008

By Max Gladwell

Business ideas often start with simple truths. For example, if you're writing a plan for a sock company, it might be that everyone has feet. This implies that your market is potentially everyone. You have more than six billion customers to choose from. While this is a compelling number, you'd be ill-advised to base your entire plan and strategy around such a general idea. Having read countless business plans and heard plenty of pitches, this is a mistake that signals inexperience and a plan that is not fully developed.

It's always been true that entrepreneurs need to focus their marketing efforts, but this is true more than ever thanks to the Internet and the rise of so many mega-niche, micro-niche, and just plain niche markets. Global domination of the sock market may be your ultimate goal, but you have to start somewhere. You have to focus and define your target audience as narrowly as possible, especially if you're bootstrapping or working with limited resources. Much of this will obviously be influenced by your product, but your product can equally be influenced by your target market. Again, thanks to the Internet and the rise of social media, defining a market and targeting it is easier than ever. Through social networks and other social platforms, people are self organizing and identifying in such a way that we can reach target audiences with very little effort and even garner feedback about how we can improve our product before we expand to broader audiences.

Marketing Your Business Online

Category: Inside ideablob | Posted: 11/28/2008

When presenting products or services on a website or other online communication vehicles, many small businesses and entrepreneurs focus more on elements like design than copy. Out of all the investments you can make to market yourself online, making great copy a priority is one of the best uses of your time and money, and will help ensure a return. Here are some tips on how to make great copy work for you:

1.  Keep copy short and to the point

No one likes to read lengthy copy online. You have to sell your prospects quickly. Use the most succinct copy possible and strive to say more with less. As a rule of thumb, unless it's absolutely necessary, no web page should contain more than 2-3 paragraphs of copy.

2.  Make sure your copy leads them to the action you want them to take

People are visiting your website for a reason. Make sure they can get the information they need, then guide them to the action you want them to take. Is it downloading a product brochure? Filling out a contact form? Placing an order? Make sure your copy drives them to that end-goal.
